This past January HotFutbol a 501 © 3 worked together with Building Bridges Worldwide to construct a basketball court at Park Izmery in Port au Prince Haiti. Working hand and hand with community members, they built retaining walls, concrete bleachers and a new court – all by hand! The basketball court will provide an additional area of play for children in the schools and the neighborhood of Park Izmery in Delmas 33. It will be a multi purpose court for basketball, volleyball, tennis, and futbol.
Hot Futbol has been running after school sports programs for children in Haiti for ten years. We are interested in improving the infrastructure of this park to help the community keep an open playing space for children and young adults. As the park improves so does opportunity for sustainability. The hoops are being installed in December and we are now fundraising for solar lighting, and electronic score board and sound system. Community events are held at this open space. With lighting and a sound system, the Haitian program can ensure safety, extend the playing time, and sustain itself through not having to rent sound systems. It is important for Haitian events to have plenty of music and broadcast the fun and excitement throughout the neighborhood.
