  • WAM Theatre Girls Ensemble Stipends

Based in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, WAM Theatre is Where Arts and Activism Meet. WAM’s vision is to create opportunity for women and girls through the mission of theatre as philanthropy. In addition to the main stage productions and special events, WAM Theatre’s activities include the Fresh Takes Play Reading Series and a comprehensive educational outreach program. WAM Theatre Girls Ensemble is an education program for girls aged 13-18. The main goal of Girls Ensemble is to provide a safe place for the participants (many of whom are living at or below the poverty level) to explore the concerns that influence their daily lives and to empower them to make informed, sound decisions that will influence the course of their entire lives. Each year, the ensemble creates an original performance using devised theatre methods. Devised theatre is a collaborative process where an ensemble uses a variety of techniques– writing, improvisation, games, movement, brainstorming, and more– to create original performance material. The Girls Ensemble program culminates with a performance of the piece they created, with full production values, for a public audience. Opportunity and access for our participants is a challenge. They may not come from a family that can afford any tuition for the program. WAM works hard to raise the necessary funding so that the program can be subsidized. As some of our potential participants also have their own jobs, WAM's goal is that Girls Ensemble is also a stipended opportunity for the participants.
